The reason why this new technology is so good at creating detailed objects with fine surfaces, or a kind of things that cannot be produced by subtractive methods in the traditional way, is because it employs a liquid photopolymer resin to build up materials layer-by-layer.
Digital 3D models are made using computer-aided design (CAD) software for resin 3D printing. These digital models are then sliced into thin layers using specific software; hence resulting into several if not hundreds of cross-sectional images that give an idea about the shape and structure of every single layer of the final product. That instruction set is then fed into the 3D printer. When printing begins a build platform is dipped into a pool of liquid resin. A laser (SLA) or projector (DLP) project UV light selectively solidifying liquid resin in accordance to predetermined cross-sections on which each layer has been manufactured from scratch. At each stage, as soon as one coating dries, the base starts moving up until it forms an object.
